Weed mesh (also called weed matting, landscape fabric, or ground cover fabric) is a synthetic or natural textile laid over soil to physically block weed germination. Unlike plastic sheeting, weed mesh is engineered with tiny pores or woven gaps that allow rainwater to drain through and let the soil breathe.

The basic principle is light suppression. Most weed seeds need sunlight to germinate. When a layer of weed mesh sits between the seed and the sun, germination rates drop dramatically. Seeds that do sprout underneath the fabric cannot push through a properly weighted mesh, so they die before reaching the surface.

Woven Polypropylene Weed Mesh

Woven polypropylene (PP) is the most common weed mesh for Australian landscaping projects. It is made from tightly interlocked plastic fibres that create a strong, tear-resistant sheet with uniform micro-gaps between the weave. What GSM Weight Means and Why It Matters

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures fabric weight and thickness. A higher GSM means a heavier, more durable mesh that blocks more light, resists tears better, and lasts longer in the ground.

  • 50 to 70gsm: lightweight, suited for temporary weed suppression in home garden beds under mulch
  • 85 to 100gsm: general-purpose weight for residential landscaping, under gravel, and around plantings
  • 110 to 130gsm: heavy-duty grade for commercial projects, high-traffic areas, and long-term installations
  • 200gsm and above: typically nonwoven geotextile or jute matting for drainage separation and erosion control

Tip for landscapers: For under-gravel applications, use a minimum of 100gsm woven mesh. Anything lighter will puncture when the aggregate is compacted. The 110gsm woven weed mat in 5m x 100m rolls is the go-to for large commercial areas.

How to Install Weed Mesh Step by Step

Even the heaviest weed mesh will fail if it is not installed correctly. Gaps, exposed edges and poor pinning let weeds find a way through.

  1. Clear the area. Remove all existing weeds, rocks and debris. If perennial weeds like couch or kikuyu are present, treat with a non-selective herbicide and wait for full die-off before laying mesh.
  2. Level the surface. Rake the soil smooth. Any sharp objects left under the mesh will puncture it over time.
  3. Roll out the mesh. Lay the weed mesh over the prepared surface. Overlap joins by at least 150mm (200mm for commercial work). Cut around existing plants using a utility knife, leaving a gap of 50 to 100mm around the stem to allow for growth.
  4. Pin it down. Secure the mesh with steel fastening pins or BioPins every 300 to 500mm along edges and joins. Use shorter pin spacing on slopes or where wind lift is a concern.
  5. Cover the mesh. Apply 50 to 100mm of mulch, gravel, or decorative stone over the mesh. The covering protects against UV degradation and holds the mesh in place.

The CSIRO notes that maintaining an adequate mulch layer over landscape fabrics significantly extends fabric life and improves long-term weed suppression performance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most failures come down to poor product selection or shortcuts during installation.

  • Using plastic sheeting instead of mesh. Plastic (black builders film, tarps) blocks water and air completely. Soil underneath goes anaerobic, plant roots suffocate, and water pools on the surface.
  • Skipping the overlap. Weeds find the smallest gap. Always overlap joins by at least 150mm and pin both layers together.
  • No covering layer. Exposed weed mesh degrades rapidly under UV. Mulch or gravel extends the lifespan by years.
  • Wrong GSM for the job. Lightweight mesh under heavy gravel tears during compaction. Match the mesh weight to the load it will carry.
  • Not pinning on slopes. Gravity and rain wash unpinned mesh downhill. Use steel pins every 300mm on any slope steeper than 1:6.

How to Calculate How Much You Need

Measure the length and width of the area you need to cover. Multiply the two numbers to get the total square metres. Then add 10 to 15 percent extra for overlaps, cuts around plants, and waste.

  • Example: A garden bed measuring 8m x 3m = 24 square metres. Add 15% = 27.6 square metres total.
  • A 1.83m x 50m roll covers 91.5 square metres, so one roll handles most residential garden bed and pathway jobs.
  • For driveways and large commercial areas, the 3.66m x 100m roll (366 square metres) or the 5m x 100m roll (500 square metres) reduces joins and installation time.

Is weed mesh the same as weed mat?

Yes. Weed mesh, weed mat, landscape fabric and ground cover fabric all refer to the same type of product. The term you hear depends on the region and the supplier. In Australia, weed mat is the most common name, but weed mesh is also widely used.

Does weed mesh let water through?

Woven and natural fibre weed mesh allows water to pass through freely. Nonwoven geotextile lets water through at a slower rate. Plastic sheeting does not let water through at all, which is why it should not be used as weed mesh.

How long does weed mesh last?

Woven polypropylene weed mesh lasts 5 to 15 years when covered with mulch or gravel. Exposed to direct sunlight, it degrades much faster. Nonwoven geotextile lasts 10 to 25 years. Jute and coir mesh is designed to break down within 12 to 24 months.

Can you lay weed mesh over existing weeds?

Does weed mesh stop all weeds?
