What Is Silt Mesh and When Should You Use It

Silt mesh is a woven geotextile fabric used on construction and landscaping sites to filter sediment from stormwater runoff before it reaches waterways.

If you are working on a site that requires an erosion and sediment control plan (ESCP), silt mesh is one of the most common tools you will need. It works differently from solid barriers by allowing water to pass through while trapping suspended soil particles.

How Silt Mesh Works for Sediment Control

Silt mesh works by creating a permeable barrier along the contour of a slope or around a disturbed area. When stormwater flows across exposed soil, it picks up fine sediment particles. The mesh intercepts this flow, slows it down, and allows sediment to settle out before the water passes through.

The key mechanism is not filtration alone. Most of the sediment removal happens because the mesh creates a temporary ponding zone behind it, giving particles time to drop out of suspension. The fabric itself catches the larger particles while finer silt settles in the pond.

This is why proper installation height and toe-in depth matter more than fabric specification alone. A poorly installed premium mesh will underperform a correctly installed standard product.

Silt Mesh vs Silt Fence vs Coir Logs

These three products all serve sediment control purposes, but they work differently and suit different site conditions. Choosing the wrong one wastes money and often fails inspection.

On most Australian construction sites, silt fence is the standard perimeter control. Silt mesh is a better option where water volume is higher or where the mesh needs to handle both sheet flow and concentrated flow without clogging.

Where to Install Silt Mesh on a Construction Site

Silt mesh placement depends on where sediment-laden runoff will travel during a storm event. Getting this wrong is the most common reason for failed council inspections.

  1. Downslope of all exposed soil areas where stormwater will carry sediment toward a drain, waterway, or neighbouring property
  2. Around stockpiles of soil, sand, or fill material that are not covered
  3. Along the site boundary where runoff could leave the site
  4. Across drainage swales to slow flow and catch sediment before it enters the stormwater system
  5. Around inlet pits as a secondary barrier when sediment socks or inlet filters are also being used

Australian state EPA guidelines require sediment controls to be installed before any earthworks begin, not after. Check your state's erosion and sediment control requirements before starting work.

How to Install Silt Mesh Properly

Incorrect installation is the single biggest reason silt mesh fails on site. The fabric needs to be trenched into the ground and supported by stakes at the correct spacing.

  • Dig a trench 150mm deep along the entire installation line
  • Lay the bottom edge of the mesh into the trench and backfill with compacted soil
  • Drive hardwood or steel stakes every 2 to 3 metres along the upslope side of the mesh
  • Attach the mesh to stakes with cable ties or wire, keeping it taut
  • Overlap mesh panels by at least 300mm and stake both edges at the overlap
  • Ensure the mesh height above ground is no more than 600mm to prevent wind damage

The toe-in step is what most people skip. Without it, runoff flows under the mesh and carries sediment straight past the barrier. A properly trenched silt mesh will last the full duration of a project.

Maintaining Silt Mesh During a Project

Once installed, silt mesh needs regular inspection and maintenance. Council inspectors will check that controls are functional, not just present.

  • Inspect after every rainfall event and repair any sections that have been undercut or knocked over
  • Remove accumulated sediment when it reaches one third of the mesh height
  • Replace any sections where the fabric has torn or the weave has separated
  • Check stake condition and re-drive any that have loosened
  • Ensure no water is bypassing the mesh at overlaps or end points

Silt mesh is a temporary control. Remove it once the site is stabilised and exposed soil is either vegetated, paved, or otherwise protected from erosion. Leaving old silt controls on a finished site is a common compliance issue.

Choosing the Right Silt Mesh Specification

Silt mesh products vary by weave density, fabric weight, and UV stabilisation. The right specification depends on the soil type, slope gradient, and expected flow volume on your site.
