Plastic sleeves are the workhorse of the revegetation industry. They are lightweight, cost-effective in bulk and do a solid job blocking spray drift and wind. Choosing the Right Sleeve Size

Sleeve sizing is straightforward once you know what you are planting and how tall it will be in the first 12 months. Picking the wrong size is one of the most common mistakes on revegetation sites, and it leads to either wasted material or inadequate protection.

  • 450 x 350mm suits standard tube stock (native grasses, small shrubs, groundcovers) up to about 300mm tall at planting
  • 800 x 500mm suits taller tube stock and forestry seedlings that will outgrow a standard sleeve within months
  • 135mm roll stock is for contractors who want to cut sleeves to a custom length on site, reducing waste on mixed plantings

Quick rule of thumb: The sleeve should sit at least 100mm above the top of the seedling at planting. This gives the plant room to grow before it emerges from the sleeve, and it keeps spray drift from drifting in over the top.

How to Install Tree Protection Sleeves

Poor installation is the number one reason sleeves fail. A sleeve that is not staked properly will blow away in the first strong wind, and you will find it tangled in a fence line 200 metres away. Follow these steps and your sleeves will stay put through an entire growing season.

  1. Plant the seedling and water it in thoroughly
  2. Drive two or three stakes into the ground in a triangle or line pattern around the seedling, spacing them evenly at the edge of where the sleeve will sit
  3. Slide the sleeve over the stakes so that it forms a tube around the plant
  4. Push the bottom of the sleeve 20 to 30mm into the soil to seal the base against wind uplift and to stop small animals from crawling underneath
  5. Check that the sleeve is not pressing against the seedling or bending the stem

For plastic sleeves, three bamboo stakes around 8-10mm x 90cm are the standard choice. They are strong enough to hold the sleeve firm but thin enough that driving them in by hand is quick work. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • Not enough stakes: Using one stake for a plastic sleeve almost guarantees it will blow off. Plastic sleeves need three stakes to form a stable tube. Corflute guards are rigid enough for one.
  • Sleeve too short: If the seedling is already poking out the top at planting, the sleeve is not doing its job. Size up or use roll stock to cut a taller piece.
  • Not burying the base: A gap between the bottom of the sleeve and the soil lets wind in underneath, which lifts the whole thing off. Push the base into the soil by at least 20mm.
  • Leaving sleeves on too long: Sleeves should come off once the plant has grown above the top by at least 200mm and the stem is woody enough to resist browsing. Leaving plastic sleeves on past this point can restrict trunk growth and trap heat.
  • Ordering too few: Budget for 5 to 10 percent extras to cover breakage, wind loss and replacement of any that get damaged during mowing or spraying.

Timing tip: The best time to remove sleeves in most of south-eastern Australia is late autumn, when growth has slowed and the plant is hardening off. Removing them in summer exposes soft new growth to heat stress and sunburn.

Plastic Sleeves vs Corflute vs Biodegradable Guards

The "which type is best" question comes up on every project. The honest answer is that it depends on your priorities.

  • Lowest upfront cost: Plastic sleeves, especially the 700-pack of 450 x 350mm sleeves at under 30 cents per unit
  • Lowest total cost over multiple seasons: Corflute guards, because one stake plus reuse across projects brings the per-use cost down fast
  • No plastic waste on site: Green-POD biodegradable guards, which break down in 12 to 18 months with no collection run needed
