Why Coir Logs Are Standard on Sydney Sites

Sydney councils and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) require erosion and sediment control measures on virtually every construction and earthworks project. The reference document for these requirements is the NSW Blue Book, formally titled Managing Urban Stormwater: Soils and Construction.

Under Blue Book guidelines, any site that disturbs soil must have an Erosion and Sediment Control Management Plan (ESCMP). Coir logs are one of the approved products for sediment barriers, channel linings and slope stabilisation within these plans.

Coir Log Sizes for Different Applications

The 200mm diameter is the most commonly ordered size for Sydney projects. It handles the majority of medium-grade slopes and stormwater applications without being too heavy for a two-person crew to position by hand.

For large civil jobs, the 300mm log provides significantly more sediment-holding capacity and stands up better to concentrated water flow during heavy Sydney rain events.

Coir logs are installed along the downhill edge of disturbed ground to catch sediment before it reaches stormwater drains or neighbouring properties.

Creek banks and waterways

Council revegetation projects along creek corridors use coir logs to stabilise banks while native plantings establish. The Northern Beaches, Hills District and Upper Parramatta River catchment all have active waterway rehabilitation programs that specify coir products.

Stormwater channels and drainage lines

Coir logs are placed along the base and edges of stormwater channels to slow water velocity and trap sediment during rain events. They work well in open channels where hard engineering solutions would be excessive or environmentally undesirable.

Steep road cuttings, embankments and batters across Sydney use coir logs pegged horizontally across the slope face. Each log acts as a sediment trap and provides a stable planting pocket for tube stock. This is common on RMS (Transport for NSW) road projects and council infrastructure upgrades.

How to Install Coir Logs Correctly

Correct installation is the difference between a coir log that performs for years and one that rolls downhill after the first heavy downpour. The method below is standard practice on Sydney construction and landscaping sites.

  1. Prepare the ground. Dig a shallow trench (approximately one-third of the log diameter deep) along the contour of the slope or the edge of the channel. The trench ensures the log sits firmly and does not roll.
  2. Position the logs end to end. Butt each log tightly against the next. Overlap the coir netting at the joins by 150mm to 200mm and peg it down so sediment cannot wash through the gaps.
  3. Drive hardwood stakes. Use 50mm x 50mm hardwood stakes at least 600mm long. Drive one stake through each end of the log and additional stakes at 1.0m to 1.5m centres along the length. Stakes go through the log and into the ground, not beside it.
  4. Backfill the uphill side. Push soil firmly against the uphill face of the log to create a tight seal with the ground. Any gap under or behind the log will allow water to undercut and bypass it.
  5. Plant into the top. Insert native tube stock directly into the top of the coir log at 300mm to 500mm spacing. As the plants establish, their roots bind the log to the soil and the vegetation takes over the erosion control function.
  6. Inspect after rain. Walk the line after the first significant rain event. Re-peg any sections that have shifted and backfill any gaps that have opened up.

Staking matters: The most common installation failure on Sydney sites is using stakes that are too short or too thin. Hardwood stakes at 50mm x 50mm x 600mm minimum are the industry standard. Do not use star pickets, bamboo or softwood dowels.

  • On slopes steeper than 1:3 (V:H), install logs on every 2m to 3m vertical interval rather than a single row at the base
  • In channels, anchor logs firmly to the bed and banks with additional stakes at 500mm centres
  • For long runs, stagger the joins between adjacent rows so water does not find a continuous gap
  • On council-inspected sites, photograph the installation before backfilling for compliance records

How Long Do Coir Logs Last on Site

Coir logs typically last between three and five years before they break down completely. The actual lifespan depends on moisture levels, soil contact, UV exposure and how quickly vegetation establishes through the log.

In permanently wet conditions like creek beds or stormwater channels, the coconut fibre breaks down faster, usually closer to the three-year mark. On drier slopes with good drainage, logs can remain structurally intact for five years or longer.

  • Wet creek beds and channels: 2 to 3 years to full decomposition
  • Moist slopes with regular rainfall: 3 to 4 years
  • Dry slopes with intermittent watering: 4 to 5+ years

The key point is that by the time the coir log decomposes, the vegetation planted into and around it should have established a root network strong enough to hold the soil on its own. The log is a temporary scaffold for permanent biological erosion control.

No removal, no waste

Because coir is 100% biodegradable coconut fibre, there is nothing to remove at the end of the product life. This is a significant advantage over plastic silt fences, geotextile products and rock check dams that must be decommissioned and disposed of.
