If you are not sure which depth to choose, go with 600mm. It is better to install a deeper barrier than you need than to discover a 450mm barrier was not deep enough after rhizomes have escaped underneath.
Dig a trench around the bamboo planting area to the full depth of your barrier material, minus 50mm. So for a 600mm barrier, you need a trench approximately 550mm deep, with the remaining 50mm sitting above ground level. The trench only needs to be about 150mm wide.
Unroll the barrier into the trench with the smooth side facing the bamboo. Rhizomes tend to follow along smooth surfaces rather than penetrating them. Where the barrier material overlaps, allow at least 600mm of overlap and secure the join with stainless steel clamps or butyl tape.

Cutting corners on the overlap is the single most common installation failure. Rhizomes will find a 100mm gap in the join and push straight through it.
